Kirin Holdings
Major Japanese beverage conglomerate producing whisky at the Fuji Gotemba Distillery, located at the base of Mount Fuji since 1973. Originally a joint venture with several international partners, the distillery is notable for housing three different types of stills (pot, column, and doubler) under one roof, giving their blenders unusual versatility. Kirin's whisky has historically been overshadowed by Suntory and Nikka, but their Fuji Single Grain and recent single malt releases have earned growing respect from the community. Their approach emphasizes transparency about production methods and JSLMA compliance.
The Fuji Gotemba Distillery was established in 1973 as a joint venture between Kirin, Seagram, and Chivas Brothers, giving it an international pedigree from day one. Located at 620 meters elevation at the foot of Mount Fuji, it uses the mountain's naturally filtered spring water. The distillery's three types of stills allow it to produce an exceptionally wide range of spirit styles in a single location, from heavy pot still malt to light column grain. For decades, Kirin's whisky was primarily consumed domestically in blends and highball products, receiving little international attention. The launch of the Fuji Single Grain in international markets changed that, earning praise for its distinctive sweetness and the honesty of its "single grain" positioning. The Fuji Single Blended and single malt releases that followed showed Kirin's growing ambition. Within the enthusiast community, Kirin is respected for its engineering precision approach and willingness to let their products speak for themselves without the marketing mystique that surrounds Suntory and Nikka.
